2018 Mazda CX-5 Release Date, Price & Overview

2018 Mazda CX-5 review

The newest 2018 Mazda CX-5 has all the makings of a great vehicle. The announced updated version is supposed to fill in all the flaws that the previous generation had. The second-gen models are supposed to update the style of the car and bring in a better exterior look which many have thought the CX-5 was lacking.

The Mazda CX-5 brand was first introduced in 2013 and was followed with disappointing sales in the following year. The rivaling cars got the upper hand when it came to the sales and the CX-5 was left in the dust. There was a facelift provided in 2016 as an attempt to revive the sales a bit, but even with a very potent and strong engine that delivers outstanding performance, the sales were slow.

Now they are attempting to revamp the brand and are planning to do so with a newly designed exterior. As many people do think, if the performance is not the case then it must be the style, so the car was updated and it received a new design, new color choices, G-Vectoring Control and a slightly wider stance. Also the US buyers will benefit from an added diesel engine variant as well.

But the compact SUV segment has become an overcrowded one along the years. One would say that we are experiencing the largest form of competition between automakers in today’s market. This will make things even harder for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the update does not promises success immediately. According to the pictures that were already released prior its release date that car appears is if it could provide some potential for the class, but what the actual results are remains to be seen.

The new design for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 has already been seen at the Los Angeles Auto Show of this year. But still we are not going to get the production version that fast. The release date is scheduled for the end of 2017 when the model starts sales.

What are Exterior Updates and Changes?

First and foremost, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 changes the dimensions a bit. The car is a bit wider and the A-Pillars have been moved a few inches to the back which gives us an impression of a longer car. The windows have not been changed in any way and the only addition here is a chrome trim which widens as it goes towards the back.

The front end of the car adds a bigger grille with a black mesh pattern. They also made a floating look for it which is mainly thanks to the slight overhand placed above it and a chrome trim insert. The lower part is similar to before but has accented body cladding which covers the bottom part of the fascia. The front end also adds the wider and thinner fog lights which generally speaking give a sporty look for the upper part of the CX-5 model.

The rear end adds a smaller overhang placed above the rear glass and also extends the side flares at the top corner of the car. The taillights are much sharper and there is a new lens layout made and the plate recess are wider and have a different shape now. The body cladding in the rear end has been sized down a bit but it looks much more sculptured than before.

2018 Mazda CX-5 – Inside Appearance

The inside of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 looks really refreshing. Maybe the inside gets to be the key element for this redesign as they managed to put together a very nice looking interior. The dash design was already looking dated and some would agree that it was ugly as well. So something was finally done about it. With the redesigned dash come the HVAC vents and redesigned HVAC controls. The infotainment display has been replaced with a new 7-inch one and is positioned on the top of the dash.

The seat design has also changed to be good looking and comfortable at the same time. There are slightly larger bolsters made for the seats. A bigger storage compartment is given between the seats which come wrapped in leather. The interior has a black and white ambience combination and the seatbacks are made to be completely black which in a way offsets the ambience and the interior atmosphere. But the inside of the CX-5 is perhaps its biggest asset that leads it to a better future.

Powertrain Capability and Output

The newest 2018 Mazda CX-5 will benefit from the same engine setup as before. There were not many strides made to develop a more powerful powertrain. This has always been a plus side of the CX-5 model so there was no need to further update it. The base version is a 2.0 liter SkyActive engine that makes 55 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the secondary is the larger 2.5 liters SkyActive one which enables an output of 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet. But the only innovation is that the US-based audiences would be able to enjoy the use of a 2.2-liter “clean” diesel choices which will produce 170 horsepower and maybe 290 pound-feet of torque.

What is the Acceleration of the 2018 Mazda CX-5?

Without the updates made for the engine of the 2018 Mazda CX-5, there are no changes when it comes to the acceleration of the car. The car remains at its best 7.7 seconds to reach 0-60 mph and a top speed of 120 mph.

Fuel Economy Ratings

The fuel economy ratings have already been released for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 model. The FWD versions measure a rating of 26 mpg in the city, 35 mph on the highway, and 29 mpg combined for the base version while the larger engine makes 26/33/29. Changing to AWD gives us a performance of 25 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined for the FWD 2.5-liter engine.

Dimensions Changes

The newest 2018 Mazda CX-5 model has updated the dimensions and has shifted things a little bit. The most noticeable part is that the car has been widened, actually it is 0.39 inches wider compared to before. The A-pillars have been shifted back by 1.38 inches, which gives us the impression of a longer car, although it has the same size compared to before. Thus the length is 178.7 inches with the wheelbase being 106.3 inches. The height is kept to 67.3 inches and the width will expand to 72.49 inches.

Safety Specs

One of the things that will help the 2018 Mazda CX-5 safety rates improve is the i-ACTIVSENSE system that is supposed to account for world class safety rates. This will be followed by a number of active and passive safety systems as well as advanced ones. The active ones include Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition and Active Driving Display. The passive ones include the high-strength SKYACTIV-BODY, which is made so it can effectively absorb the strength of the impact and disperse it safely not allowing harm to the passengers inside. Also, polypropylene foam is added for the seats of the inside which will help improve not only the comfort but also the security of the passengers during crashes.

List of Rivals

Rivals are an important part to consider for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 model. In fact the rivals are the main reason the CX-5 is being updated. The segment already hosts a number of vehicles that already pose a big threat for the upcoming Mazda model. The update it provides will get it closer to them but only time will tell whether the changes are good enough. The most important cars in the compact segment are the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape vehicles, but there are also others to consider like the Chevrolet Equinox, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4.
