2018 Mazda 2 Release Date, Price, Design Overview

2018 Mazda 2 review

The newly announced update for the 2018 Mazda 2 has been announced. It is going to be almost four years from the last version of the car and it is due time to refresh the model a bit. What they did here is to simply modify bits and pieces but we essentially have a familiar model on our hands.

The Mazda 2 model is famous for its nimble driving feel and also very good gas mileage numbers. It actually stands about among the other base hatchback models on the market, but the only downfall of the car is that it has limited features and a rather simple interior. The inside has not been addressed so much with this update so we will be seeing a rather simple approach when it comes to updating this part of the car.

The pictures of the updated version of the 2018 model have been on the market for quite some time now but we still do not have a confirmation about the exact release date. The information is still limited but we have the necessary info in our review. We think that even with the scarce update the model will be a fun new entry for the brand.

What is the Potential Release Date of the 2018 Mazda 2?

The updated 2018 Mazda 2 model will probably be available by mid-2018. We predict that the initial release date which happens in Japan will be an introduction and it will spread across other respective markets once it starts from the homefront.

What is the Price?

The price for this car has always been very affordable and so will the 2018 Mazda 2 continue on the same premise. The price has not been officially released, but if we are to guess, the model will probably have a starting price of around 15,000 USD.

Exterior Update

With the changes implicated to the 2018 Mazda 2 model we can see a bit of a different style. Although the car manages to retain the basis it also manages to successfully combine some zoom-zoom character lines with a rather simple exterior. But a change has been made for their “grinning” grille design in the front as it adopts a bolder trapezoidal grille shape. Compared to the Ford Fiesta model, with which it shares some details, this model is a bit sporty but also a bit restrained. The model will also look wider and also lower, but in fact the model does not change dimensions. It is mainly because of the design language which makes the car look more balanced and stable.

Inside Appearance

The interior of the 2018 Mazda 2 has quite a good setup on the inside. The interior is rather simple but at the same time very tasteful. Given the price of the car, you would not expect a whole lot to be squeezed inside, but somehow they do manage to do it. The design is great with the driver-focused cabins that Mazda uses for their cars, and they do offer a very suitable combination of colors for the inside. The windows are also very open and allow lots of light to come inside so we have a very nice atmosphere for the interior of the Mazda 2.

Powertrain Option

The 2018 Mazda 2 will continue to use the same type of engine which it had before. We have the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine on our hands, and although it does not provide a lot of power it is still suitable for the subcompact segment. The model outputs only 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque and is considered as significantly underpowered for the segment. This model also comes with a five-speed manual gearbox as part of its drivetrain or a four-speed automatic transmission, but the former one is a lot more suitable.

0-60 mph Acceleration Ability

The small subcompact 2018 Mazda 2 will offer an acceleration rating of between 8 to 9 second. The time to reach 0-60 mph has not been tested with this upcoming model but we have an impression that this will change a bit for the newest model. We also have the information that the top speed of 87 mph is going to be unchanged.

Fuel Economy Ratings

The 2018 Mazda 2 will retain the same fuel economy characteristics as its predecessors have. Although, the EPA ratings are very good, it is still nothing to get excited about. The car is very useful for its segment and will remain to be so even with the 2018 update. Using the five-speed manual the stats come to 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined. A four-speed automatic transmission one has an EPA rating of 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.

Dimensions for the 2018 Mazda 2

Although this is an update for the 2018 Mazda 2, there are some modifications when it comes to the dimensions of the car. Although slight, these are going to help the car be more balanced than it was before. The model now stretches 3.1 inches farther in its wheelbase, giving us a total of 101.2 inches. The overall length has also been changed and is now 6.3 inches longer, giving us a total of 159.8. The model is also 1.0 inch taller, but the width is the same and it stands at 66.7 inches. The weight does not change drastically as the Mazda 2 was already a very light entry in the segment so the changes are miniscule at best.

Safety Systems

The 2018 Mazda 2 will continue to offer a standard set of safety equipment for the subcompact segment. The only thing that it is not included are additionally electronic safety systems and also the optional equipment that come for this part. The included pieces of equipment are six airbags: front, front-side, and side curtains that cover the windows and the usual electronic safety technology is stability control, brake override, and an anti-lock braking system.

Rivaling Vehicles

Although the 2018 Mazda 2 is now new, the rivaling models are going to be old. We mean that the car is not going to change its competitors as rivals in the subcompact range, with the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta and Nissan Versa Note being its familiar foes.
