With the introduction of the 2018 Lexus RX 350 the car is going to keep much of its trademarks and design cues which were established with previous models. In fact, this version will probably be memorable for its polarizing design that is owed to the design language that Lexus has introduced recently for their vehicles. But driving is still a problem for the RX 350 as it is not that engaging and fun to drive, even in the F Sport form.
The Lexus RX 350 was actually redesigned quite recently, which gave way to the new design language and also some implementations for the inside of the car. That is why the 2018 version of the Lexus RX 350 is not going to go all out and change significantly. But we are happy to say that the lavish interior and exterior are kept for the car.
But as you might have seen from the pictures the premium shape is still here and is what mainly makes the vehicle a remarkable one. It does not lose its upscale look and it still remains one of our favorite models even with the lack lustered driving ability. We will see if the good looks are enough to strive the competition away and you will be able to find out more about the release date and other specs in this review.
When is the Release Date of the 2018 Lexus RX 350 Coming?
The newest 2018 Lexus RX 350 is actually expected to come out by the start of the upcoming year. No official news was made for the release date so far but it is more than certain that they are preparing it for the lineup which will debut by the beginning of the 2018 which will also mark the intro for the latest Lexus lineup of updates and new vehicles.
Has the Price Changed?
The luxury 2018 Lexus RX 350 will not get a big price boost. It will be priced similarly and have a price which is almost the same as before. We are expecting it to be somewhere around 44,000 USD for starters.
A Standout Design for the 2018 Lexus RX 350
We really have to give props to the 2018 Lexus RX 350 for its exterior design. It really stands out among the sea of some misshaped and standard looking models. It will still use the familiar details of the previous car, with the most prominent one being the signature spindle grille in front. It is flanked with “triple-L” headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and LED fog lamps. Maybe the second most recognizable part is the “floating” roof line design which manages to taper near the rearmost roof pillar and that way provide a coupe-like profile. This design is perhaps one of the more exotic ones seen on the current market and it really manages to showcase the great ideas that Lexus has been making with their new line of products.
A Calm-looking and Ordered Interior
As for the inside of the 2018 Lexus RX 350 we have a pretty calm and exceptionally ordered inside. It is not too busy and everything has been made with precision. The dash design and the door trims are actually based on the latest one seen on the GS and IS sport sedan models. But they do not go over the top as those cars do and keep the inside appearance more in line with the NX car which manages to keep things small and balanced. The dash design has a horizontal orientation and asymmetrical curves which frame the center stack. The interior is entirely driver-orientated and the cabin generally feels neat and very well designed. It is actually great that they did not clutter the inside as much as they did some other Lexus products and a toned down color scheme is also present here which helps with the atmosphere.
Still a Lack Lustered Powertrain
Even though the looks of the 2018 Lexus RX 350 make for a pretty sporty orientated car, the performance does not share the same idea. There is a choice between a V-6-powered RX 350 in front- or all-wheel drive and hybrid RX 450h with all-wheel drive. The V-6 version is capable of making 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque and this setup comes with a variable valve system which helps with the fuel economy a bit. As for the RX 450h hybrid it uses a 3.5-liter V-6, which makes 259 hp and 247 pound-feet of torque.
0-60 mph and Top Speed
Even for this version of 2018 Lexus RX 350 the specs are not going to change. It will still remain at 7.1 seconds to reach 0-60 mph and the car is going to be able to develop a top speed of 115 mph. Not bad, but it still does not make up for the lack of performance that the car has.
Decent Non-Hybrid Fuel Economy
In order to make up for the lack lustered performance of the engine, the 2018 Lexus RX 350 is capable of making great fuel economy. In its base non-hybrid form the car is capable of attaining 20 mpg city, 28 highway, 23 combined with the front-wheel drive or 19/26/22 mpg with the optional all-wheel mode. But if you really want a standout model then the RX 450h hybrid is capable of making the best fuel consumption rating in the class. It gives us 30/28/30 mpg with the AWD and scores pretty high in fuel saving capability.
The Size of the 2018 Lexus RX 350
No dimension changes were implemented for the newest 2018 Lexus RX 350 car. It will have the same size and provide the same interior and cargo capacity as well. Leaving it 192.5 inches long with a wheelbase of 109.8 inches, height 67.7 inches and width 74.6 inches. This allows it to have an interior capacity of 108 cu ft for the passenger volume and 18 cu ft for cargo.
Are the Safety Scores Going to Improve this Year?
The previous model scored low on the safety scores and we do not see the 2018 Lexus RX 350 improving. As they did not make a large effort to change this car so much it will probably inherit the overall 4 star rating given by the NHTSA. Although they managed to make an effort by making some important active safety features standard which means that they are still planning on improving for the future models. Some standard pieces of equipment include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist and departure warning, and automatic high beam headlamps. Occupant safety is addressed with additions like 10 standard airbags, including a driver knee bag and a passenger-side cushion-mounted anti-submarine airbag. And finally there is a rearview camera offered as well.
Will the Competition Gain an Advantage?
We are not really sure if the 2018 Lexus RX 350 has been updated enough so it could rival the most established models on the market. The segment is vast and although the car is good it has only its looks to rely on. It will need to face cars like Acura MDX, Cadillac XT5, Lincoln MKX and Volvo XC90.
