New spy photos have revealed that the 2018 Kia Soule will be a facelift version. Since the second-generation model made its debut in 2014, we do not expect the third-gen cars to come out for quite some time now. But since we have seen the pictures of a camouflaged Soul car that were released, we immediately investigated it and managed to find out that it is in fact a facelift being prepared to come out in 2018. Honestly speaking, we do not need a next-gen so fast and it would be next to impossible to make it, but a refreshed version can sometimes do wonders for the sales.
The current look of the 2018 Kia Soul does not provide us with some solid evidence. The thing that we do manage to see is that the car is sporting a lot of camouflage, covering the majority of the front end of the car. Although much of it is covered, there are still a lot of speculations and assumptions on how will the car look. We have even seen some renderings which propose the new potential appearance for the Kia Soul model.
As is the case with every car covered in camo and the spy photos that emerge, there are many assumptions. Some of them are valid and some of them end up not to be true. There is still a long way until the car gets to be released so a lot of things can happen till then. We are going to keep investigating on this matter, but until then here is the review.
Potential Release Date for the 2018 Kia Soul
As far as things go for the release date of the 2018 Kia Soul, the model is not yet officially confirmed. But the readiness of the mule car leads us to believe that the most appropriate and also possible time for this car to come out must be the first quarter of 2018.
Price Rates for the 2018 Kia Soul
The price for the 2018 Kia Soul will be more or less similar to the current model. The starting price for the base version is $15,190, while the “+” trim level is priced $18,690, with the range-topping “!” trim being offered at $20,790.
Details about the Exterior
The pictures show us a 2018 Kia Soule testing mule completely covered in black camo. The front and back end are probably the biggest parts of the car which are subjected to change and although we cannot see most of it we know that these parts are going to be different compared to now.
The fog lights are positioned higher and are a bit set apart. There is a possibility that the grille is going to come with a horizontal split and change things up a bit. The headlights are going to come with minor changes and mainly look the same.
The side view of the car suggests a car with some toned down wheel arches. The fake air vents from the current model have been removed as well with the side mirrors having the same kind of a design but being positioned higher. The window between the rear door and the hatch has thicker padding which means that it will be bigger.
The rear end is not going to make many changes. The back part will only tamper with the taillights which will still have a similar design but the entire hatch will for the most part look similar compared to the outgoing model.
Interior Changes and Appearance
The interior of the 2018 Kia Soul is probably not going to have many changes. We presume that the model will continue with roughly the same kind of characteristics so we can expect the same dash and center console parts. There is probably going to be room for the 4.3-inch TFT display and an updated infotainment system but we do expect the screen to be updated for the higher trim levels.
The current car already has a very smooth looking inside. The seats may change a little bit so they add some more comfort and perhaps some softer materials. Because we are getting a larger glass part for the rear, it will also account for different paddings for the rear end of the car.
We do suspect that the 2018 Kia Soul is going to probably transfer the current lineup of engines. But there are also some statements which say that we are getting at least one new engine choice and an updated gearshifter. If the old lineup of engines gets to be used we can expect a 1.6-liter engine for the base version which makes 120 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque. The mid-range choice is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The choice for both versions is a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
0-60 mph Acceleration
The current powertrain options will enable the 2018 Kia Soul to reach an acceleration of 6.5 seconds to reach 0-60 mph. This is of course if the engine choice remain the same. But for the most part we do consider that even with new the engine offers, the acceleration will probably be similar. The top speed for the current model is 125 mph.
Fuel Economy Rating
The current version of the Soul is not as fuel efficient as you would think, but the 2018 Kia Soul might address those things. Depending on which body changes they manage to squeeze in they would reduce wind resistance and make the car much more fuel efficient. But for now it is much easier to think that the new generation model will carry more body changes. So the 2018 version might carry similar aspects connected with its EPA rating. Thus expect them to be in the range of 25 mpg city, 30 highway, 27 combined, that the base engine had or 25/30/27 mpg for the larger secondary engine.
As mentioned, the 2018 Kia Soul will not make any drastic body changes and these also include the dimensions. Retaining the dimensions is a good idea for now and the facelift will not deal in those. We can expect the car to get bigger in the further future but not now. The new car will be 163.0 inches long, with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, width 70.9 inches and height 63.5 inches. This accounts for a curb weight of 3202 lb or an interior volume of 97 cu ft and a cargo bay of 24 cu ft.
What are the Safety Features?
The 2018 Kia Soul will probably inherit the good safety ratings that its predecessor had. The current model did great in federal testing and also with the IIHS crash testing as well, getting an overall 5-star rating and a “Good” mark as well. We are assuming that the facelifted version will get the same results since it has not changed structurally that much. The model will also carry over the six airbags, with dual front airbags, seat-mounted side bags, and full-length side curtain bags. Also included are the anti-lock braking, brake assist, hill-start assist, and electronic stability control.
List of Rivaling Cars
The facelifted 2016 Kia Soul will face the same kind of competition that the previous model used to have. In fact the closest competitors this time will be the Chevy Trax and the Honda HR-V, with the latter also suspected of getting its own updated version for the forthcoming year.
