2018 Jeep Renegade Is The Best Crossover?

2018 Jeep Renegade review

Renegade is the only successful subcompact crossover from Jeep, and we don’t expect anything less from 2018 Jeep Renegade. Although it hasn’t been announced yet, the 2018 Jeep Renegade is going to be produced practically unchanged from its predecessors, since it is a fairly new concept.

The most interesting thing about it is that the idea didn’t come from the Chrysler engineers, but straight out from Fiat. They based the Jeep Renegade on their own platform since Fiat is proven to be successful in small vehicles manufactured department. Most of the Jeep fans were very worried because of the Fiat’s involvement. There was a fear the Jeep would lose its soul and that it wouldn’t be a Jeep, because of the Italian platform. And the two models we got to see, from the previous two years proved those fears unjustified.

The 2018 Jeep Renegade will be offered at least in four models from which you can choose from. There could be some additional trims, with added features but we don’t expect any drastic redesign. Not until the year 2020, at least.

What Is The 2018 Jeep Renegade Release Date?

The actual production time frame hasn’t been precised yet, but our sources tell us that we can expect it to begin somewhere in November, and we expect the 2018 Jeep Renegade release date to be somewhere in the first quarter of 2018 or as early as December of 2017. The most recent model was released back in February of 2017, just to have something to compare with.

Do We Know The 2018 Jeep Renegade Price?

Since we don’t think that there are going to be some major differences between the most recent version and the next one, the 2018 Jeep Renegade price is also going to stay unchanged, or slightly different. It will depend on the model you want to buy and maybe some additional features you would like.

The new official prices are not going to be known until the announcement, which will probably happen in the next few months. For now, we can only speculate according to the official prices for the newest model.

2018 Jeep Renegade Exterior Features Have “Easter Eggs”!

The small size of the 2017 Jeep Renegade exterior is something that compels people to buy it. It is not just the relatively low price because you can buy some of the Jeep’s competitors from the same class for a little bit more, but with a lot more equipment. The size and the fondness of the western markets towards the SUV segment make this kind of a vehicle a perfect one for the city drive. Their managers went as far the Warner Brothers in order to promote their final product. The 2016 Jeep Renegade was the Bruce Wayne’s vehicle in the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and they even made the Batman edition of that vehicle for that year. Managers know how to make this vehicle closer to the wider audience, and that made this Jeep Renegade, one of the most successful Jeeps in the modern history.

It has and it will continue to wear traditional Jeep details like the round headlamps and the 7 strokes vertical grille, but we may expect some changes in the new hood, different materials, new door knobs, etc.

The current situation for the 2018 Jeep Renegade Exterior includes really beautiful “easter eggs” like some miniature images hidden inside the mirror heaters and the fiat’s spider on the fuel tank. Other more important details like a hood bump that makes you feel like you are in a huge SUV, quality roof rail, and 2 really strange removable roof plates… It is a good idea to make the roof, or parts of it removable, but there are no glass surfaces underneath the metal plates, so you are screwed if it starts raining and your metal plates are off. There is an $300 option to make the front plate automated, but there are no such options for the rear one. We think that it would be a good idea to make the entire sunroof automated.

Practically The Same 2018 Jeep Renegade Interior

We expect the 2018 Jeep Renegade to carry its standard details like it had on the previous versions. To be fair, if you really want to buy the 2018 Jeep Renegade, buy the top of the line 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk or 2018 Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk. You will not feel anything missing because you will have the soft touch finish, sport heated seats (without the adjustable headrest), leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, power sunroof (at least the front part), touchscreen dashboard display… In other words, you will have the vehicle as it was meant to be, by the designers.

2018 Jeep Renegade Engine Specs Are Simple But Special

One cool thing about the 2018 Jeep Renegade engine will, most certainly, going to be its sound. Even now the quality of its two engine and two transmission versions is something special. Expect the engine lineup to stay the same as in the past. That being said, we expect the 2.4-liter MultiAir engine with 180 horsepower or 1.4-liter turbo four MultiAir engine with 160 horsepower.

Like most of the vehicles, the 2018 Jeep Renegade will be an FWD system with 4×4 “on demand”. That system was made for fuel efficient purposes. That means that it uses the rear wheels only when the computer says it is needed. There is no central differential, but some clutch pack mounted right onto the rear axle. The system is not that new, and it is not perfect but 2018 Jeep Renegade will not be just any other vehicle in its class. The Jeep has an added “lock feature”. It is there to keep the rear wheels and front wheels in 50:50 ratio, or somewhere around that number. It will not let the rear wheels just chill on the back, while the front wheels are doing all the work. Why do we say that it is not the real 50:50 ratio? Well simply because that is the system used by Jeep for a long time.

To understand their solution, imagine a slow downhill crawl. If you try to go down on slow speed with some FWD terrain, you will have the front wheels spinning on low, and rear wheels doing nothing. When you try to brake, the front wheels are braking, while the rear wheels are spinning. That can be very dangerous because you don’t have a lateral stability. If you share the drive between the front and rear diagonal wheels, you will have lateral stability and you will finish that downhill safely. In the end, the lockable center differential is always better, but if you want good fuel economy, and you want this kind of 4×4, the 2018 Jeep Renegade is the best possible on-demand 4×4 system out there.

Off road is the something 2018 Jeep Renegade is going to call its home, and so should you if you choose to buy one. But, an open road will not be a problem.

It will have a number of different drive modes

  • Auto
  • Snow
  • Mud
  • Sand
  • Rock

The 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and 2018 Jeep Renegade Sand Hawk will both have an active Drive Low 20:1 crawl ratio and Rock mode. But when you really look at that Active Drive Low, it does nothing special. The official information from Jeep is that it:

  • Alters the throttle pedal sensitivity
  • Alters the stability control calibration

It forces the car to start in 1st gear in Automatic and Snow mode (without pushing the Active Drive Low mode button, Automatic and Snow mode will start with the second gear); Sand, mud and rock mode always start in 1st gear.

The official EPA numbers haven’t been published for 2017 yet. So we can only assume that the numbers are going to be almost the same as for the 2016 model. In that case, the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with manual transmission produces somewhere around 27mpg combined in both wheel combinations. The 2.4-liter engine FWD was rated at 25mpg combined and 4WD at 24mpg.

2018 Jeep Renegade 1.4 liter MPG

  • 24mpg city/ 31mpg highway/ 27mpg combined

2018 Jeep Renegade 2.4 liter MPG

  • FWD 22mpg city/ 31mpg highway/ 25mpg combined
  • 4WD 21mpg city/ 29mpg highway/ 24mpg combined

Verdict

The 2018 Jeep Renegade will be one of the cheapest off-road vehicles you can find. Yes, they have some good competition in Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke and Toyota C-HR but none of them is that good in off road drive. It is a complete subcompact crossover. Yes, the MPG numbers are not that good, and it is too boxy, but it sticks to the ground where ever you want to go, it has a removable roof panel and it has a good engine. Perfect for those town folks who sometimes want to go off road.
