Updating the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV and Preparing for a New Ride

2018 Chevrolet Spark EV Review

The update announced with the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV is not going to get people as excited as the thing it is introducing for the future. This car is going to be an electric version of the base Spark model which has received an update recently. They immediately saw it fit to do the same with their EV version and provide similar kind and appropriate updates to their electric car. But Chevy is gearing up for something new for their brand. This car will only be an introduction for things to come as they are planning to introduce a completely new electric vehicle. But they are keeping most things quiet about it as the potential future model is being developed. Until then we have the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV to deal with so we can review that can first.

The base Spark model started its career in 1998, and was originally known as Daewoo Matiz. But when GM stepped in and overtook the brand the name was changed to the current one. Since 2005 this car has been carrying the name Chevrolet Spark or Chevrolet Matiz, depending on the market where the vehicle was released. The brand went on sale for the first time in 2013 and with it also came the Chevrolet Spark EV version which made more people excited than the base car.

The Chevy Spark is currently in its third-generation which has stared production in 2010. The EV version managed to fix a lot of things that were wrong with the base form of the car. People saw it fitting that this car was offered as the base one did not really have a suitable competition. But with the introduction of the EV it gave the car a completely different sphere to operate in. The car sold fast and it was its balanced design, sharp steering and clever packaging that brought all the attention to the Spark EV.

With the update made to the base version, the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV will also receive similar kind of updates. It will mostly transfer the parts which were changed for the base version and will adopt its own elements which are necessary for an electric car. This is something that people are going to be excited about, but it will not be as big of a news as the one everyone is expecting. The introduction of completely new electric Chevy car will probably excite more people. But the EV will do its best to prepare the stage for this one. With the release date coming soon, let’s check out with the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV has got to offer us.

When is the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV coming out?

The prediction about the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV coming out states that it will be out within this year. The base model has made its debut last year so it is not going to take them to long to release the electric version of the car. The last model came within a year after the base version was released so we are predicting that it will be done in the same way. Thus the release date will probably be somewhere by the end of 2017. The US release date will probably came at the same time as they are releasing the car in all markets at the same time. As far as the future electric car that Chevy is rumored about producing, it will probably drop somewhere in 2020. But this model not talked about so much now as there are almost no information about it.

What are the Prices?

The base price of the new 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV is going to be similar to the current one. The outgoing Spark EV is offered for a base MSRP price of $27,495. The new one will probably not be so much higher when compared to the current price and it will still make the vehicle competitive for the market. Although the base model is one of the most inexpensive vehicles in its class, the EV more than doubles the price. But the benefits of an EV are much greater when you compare them to the what the base version of the car can do for you. The fuel economy is of course the most important benefit here and is the reason why the pricing is so much inflated compared to the

The Look of the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV

The newest 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV looks exactly like the base non-electric version. This car has been crafted based on the Beat concept that came some time ago. The model actually plays tricks on you as you have to look closer to spot that it is not a three-door hatchback. The C-Pillars actually hide the rear door handles, so in a way the design gives us the look of a three-door hatch car but comes with the practicality of a five-door hatch.

The updates that the model received are not as plentiful that you would expect them to be. It is basically the same kind of a car with the usual look with some additional gadgets that have been placed to make the car more relevant. So new equipment are the halogen lamps and the daytime running lamps which are featured as standard. The side mirrors have been primed up as they are now equipped with heating and have integrated turn signals as well as being offered with the same body color as the entire car has.

The front part will offer a new sporty front fascia and some changes for the rear fascia as well. The additions include rocker panel moldings while the liftgate handle trim and the beltline get chrome accents. Additionally, there is a range of colors that you can opt for which include Lime and Grape Ice, Black Granite,  Salsa and Denim, Summit White and Silver Ice.

The Interior Update for the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV

The interior of the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV will also copy the same one seen in the base model of the car. The way that they have approached it is to provide a much more extensive update for the inside than they made for the outside of the car. All in all, it is still not as dramatic as you would expect but will keep the model fresher and appealing for a period of time. There is a new instrument panel which comes with a motorcycle-like gauge cluster while the center console has been made in a way that it provides maximum storage capacity and also enables good visibility for the driver when using the equipment.

There are also going to be some new decorative inserts made for the instrument panel and the front doors. While this part addresses and helps with the aesthetics of the vehicle the ice blue ambient lighting is going to help with the atmosphere of the car and bring a cool look on the inside. Additional and optional offers include heated leatherette seats and a leather wrapped steering wheel. There are also interior colors that you can choose from and these are Silver, White, Green and Blue.

The Most Important Thing is Still the Drivetrain

The 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV will simply transfer the drivetrain as it has served it well for now. All of the changes that people think are going to be developed will probably be introduced with the different Chevy car, but as for the Spark EV this is all that it has to offer. Thus the model will receive permanent-magnet coaxial electric motor which uses a 21-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It will manage to produce a total of 105 kW which translates to 140 horsepower, but the impressive thing is still the 400 lb-ft of torque it has. You might not be able to see this when you look at the car but once you drive it you will realize where all of that torque comes from. It will also use a 1-speed direct drive which is standard for this kind of a car. It will also be able to produce a range of 82 miles, which puts it in front of some rivaling vehicles who thought that they could do better, but the Spark EV still holds an advantage to them.

0-60 mph and Top Speed

The 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV will have pretty good acceleration ability. It may be surprising to say, but the car will be able to reach 0-60 mph in 8 seconds and also have a top speed of 90 mph. Compared to the base version which goes to 60 mph in around 11 ticks of a second, the EV is a much better car.

Fuel Economy Ratings for the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV

The fuel economy of the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV is still good and makes it as one of the best in the segment. Other models may have started to develop their more powerful setups and are thinking about improving the usage of fuel here but the all-electric Spark EV is rated with 119 mpge for a combined rating, making it one of the better and desirable models on the market. But other cars have been developing so it is hard to say whether this is enough to keep the car afloat for a longer period of time.

Unchanged Dimensions for the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV

The size of the updated 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV is not going to change at all. They are going to keep the model standard to what we already have. Generally speaking the size is also the same as the base version as the powertrain is the only real difference between these two cars. Nevertheless some models include much more differences instead of just the basic ones which make the car. The newest 2018 version of the Spark EV will be 144.7 inches long and have a wheelbase of 93.5 inches. The height is 61 inches and the width is 62.9 inches. The model will also allow the same interior numbers with the cargo volume being 11.4 cu-ft. The interior spacing is a little bit different compared to the base version but what is a great advantage for the Spark EV is that it manages to package the battery as tucked away as possible so not to disturb the interior.

Safety Additions and Equipment

As far as the safety equipment for the 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV goes, it is pretty much standard. It appears that they have decided against updating the offer heavily and have merely transferred the one that the car had so far. The car has earned a top safety pick in the past and does hold a bar to even the hardest and most competitive models on the market but could have added something more just to make the model more competitive and simply expand the offer a bit. So the standard sort of equipment that is offered here includes dual front, front-side, and side curtain airbags while in the rear you will find rear-side airbags and knee airbags. More advanced equipment was expected but since the car already holds pretty decent numbers they thought it would be better to wait with those.

Other Competing Cars

If we compare the newest 2018 Chevrolet Spark EV to its competition, it holds a lot of advantages to some of the competing cars. One of the things is of course range and when it comes to electric cars it is something that people look most to. The Spark EV has the potential to go one an electric engine alone much more than cars like Mitsubishi i-MIEV or the Ford Focus EV. Bu the Nissan Leaf is the ultimate vehicle when it comes to range in this segment. As far as other rivals, like the Volkswagen e-Golf or the Kia Soul EV and even the Fiat 500e which have a larger battery and have advanced their technology recently, the Spark might not be as competitive as people would think. Yet this is perhaps the reason why Chevy is planning a completely new car and will bring it to the market. All in all, the vehicle is facing a full segment of electric cars that have an advantage compared to it so it will be hard to find an audience even for the updated version.
