2018 Audi TT RS review

Audi has just unveiled their beefed up version of the 2018 Audi TT RS model. The model was showcased at this year’s Beijing Auto Show and will be production ready and available for sale this year in its home market. If the RS version also follows the same formula as with the introduction of the base TT model, then the TT RS car will be available in the US market within a year’s time after the initial release.

The first Audi TT RS version was built in 2009 and it took them 11 years after the initial release of the base TT version to introduce a beefed up RS brand. The model was both available as a coupe version and a roadster model and it actually quickly became more popular than the TTS model in terms of sales.

The original TT RS model was first featured in the American market in 2012 and came here after the first Plus model was released. The new 2018 version holds a lot of prospect already. Ever since the first pictures of the car were released people’s anticipations rose even higher. So this review will explain to you what novelties we can expect from this car and what has changed for it.

When is the 2018 Audi TT RS Release Date?

The newest 2018 Audi TT RS model is going to be offered this year in the home market fist. The model will make its debut in Europe but will take some time for it to arrive in America. The base TT version took almost a year to cross the pond so the same thing might happen here. Expect the release date for the 2018 Audi TT RS to be somewhere in the start of 2018 for the American audiences.

What is the Starting Price?

The US price for the 2018 Audi TT RS has not been officially announced. The car will be available for a base MSRP of €66,400 in the European market but we estimate that the US version will cost somewhere around $68,000 for when the model crosses the ocean.

Exterior Design and Upgrades

The new 2018 Audi TT RS will mostly be based on the looks of the third-gen base TT model. It has the front grille and redesigned headlamps and a bumper seen in the base version, but makes it a little bit aggressive with some new parts. One of them is the honeycomb mesh, which every high-performance Audi model has. The single frame grille is larger and there are also larger air intakes on the bumper with silver blade-like elements on the lower apron.

The model also adopts beefier fenders and side skirts, newly designed wheels and carbon-fiber mirror caps. The rear end of the car also employs a redesigned bumper, a fixed rear wing, and two large, oval exhaust tailpipes. Also, this model will be the first of its kind to use the Matrix OLED technology on series-production taillights.

Inside Changes and Appearance

The inside of the new 2018 Audi TT RS will devise the interior in the same way as the last generation model did. The basic inside look from the TT model will be enhanced with some sporty elements which are unique to the RS brand. Some of the highlights are red accents on the A/C vents, red stitching on the center console, gear shifter, and doors panels, and also a flat-bottom steering wheel. The wheel also comes wrapped in leather and has two operating buttons placed on it.

All of the RS models will come with a 12.3-inch screen in the instrument cluster. It helps to display information and can be used in three views. The added carbon-fiber and aluminum trim elements on the center console further add the sportiness of the model and you can see those on the door panels, sports pedals, and the bolstered seats as well.

Powertrain Choice

There were a lot of rumors which said that the future 2018 Audi TT RS will drop using a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, but those rumors were put to rest when they announced that the same engine will make a comeback. But the previous 2.5-liter engine was a bit heavier, so the newly updated one will be 22 pounds lighter and will increase the horsepower by 17 percent. So we can expect to get a total output of around 400 horsepower which is a 60 hp increase compared to before. The car will also include a seven-speed, dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission but no optional manual choice.

0-60 mph Ability and Top Speed

The new 2018 Audi TT RS is going to be faster than the last one. It will be able to race to 0-60 mph in a matter of 3.7 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155 mph, but the limiter can be removed so the car can achieve a maximum top speed of 174 mph.

Fuel Economy Rates

As far as the fuel economy specifications are concerned for the 2018 Audi TT RS model, they are not going to get any better. The future 2018 of the Audi TT RS will hold on to the same kind of fuel consumption rates which amount to 18 mpg city drive and 25 mpg highway. The driving ability may seem better for this car but it will not improve in any way.

Dimensions

The 2018 Audi TT RS version does not grow in terms of its size compared to the base model. The car will retain the same type of numbers when it comes to its size. It will still be 164.4 inches long and have a wheelbase of 98.6 inches. The height is 52.8 inches and the width is 72.0 inches. Also the curb weight will be around 3250 lb.

What are the Safety Characteristics?

The safety features for the 2018 Audi TT RS will be transferred from its base model also. This means driver and front passenger dual-stage airbags, front thorax side airbags, knee airbags, and side head curtain airbags. The standard safety equipment also includes front passenger detection for airbags, central locking system with safety unlock feature if airbags deploy, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, , safety belt reminder, electronic stability control lower anchors and tethers for children in rear seats, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Rivaling Cars

With the prospect of the 2018 Audi TT RS model appearing in the market, the completion will stiffen a little bit. There are other great models and people will decided which one might be the best choice for them. Models to consider in the segment include the Porsche 718 Cayman and the Nissan 370Z Nismo models.
