The 2018 Audi S3 Joining the List of Updated Audi Cars

2018 Audi S3 review

One of the latest unveiling done by Audi is their 2018 Audi S3 model. This is a vehicle which will receive a facelift and will be a part of the upcoming slant of vehicles which Audi is both making and updating. Audi has been really busy as of late. We have already announced the coming A4, R8 and Q7 which have already debuted and on their way to their respective markets where they are expected to make all kinds of noise. But the model that we have recently learned about is going to be the S3 which is not really a surprising entry on Audi’s roster, but the way that they announced it took a lot of people aback.

The big reveal actually came at the New York Audi show where Audi portrayed its latest R8 Spyder vehicle. Of course, everyone was more than interested and happy to see the new Spyder car but then Audi went and announced that they are also working on an Audi S3 with a release date scheduled for 2018. Of course, this is only a facelift for the car and a new vernation is not stated and perhaps won’t be seen for quite some time.

The Audi S3 is going to come out in its hatchback or Sportback version, and we are also going to see the sedan and convertible. We are firstly reporting about the hatch, while the other ones are going to be review separately. All in all, you can clearly see from the pictures that the exterior f the car has gained a very beautiful redesign as it features a new styling language and some bits and pieces which have been updated. Inside there are some new pieces of technology and updated equipment which is to be expected with a facelift. When it comes to the engines, they are going to be slightly more powerful but will not change further than that.

One thing which people in the US are not going to like is that the Sportback S3 is not being sold there. It is exclusively going to be released in Europe. But people who like the luxurious sedan or crave for a convertible option may still get the chance to own one as Audi is making those two variants available for the US customers.

Now without further ado here is our take and our review about the upcoming 2018 Audi S3.

When is the Release Date for the 2018 Audi S3 Model?

For now we are only aware about the details for the 2018 Audi S3 hatchback versions. It is confirmed that the car is going to be available in three-door and five-door variants and will be seen within the upcoming year. The vehicles are going to be released within the third quarter of 2017. But the hatch version only arrives in its respective home market and some other European ones. The hatch is still not going to be offered in the US and people are going to have to find other hatchback variants in the market if they want one. But the sedan and the convertible versions of the S3 will arrive there. But the release date is still not known and we expect these options to be given sometimes next year.

2018 Audi S3 Price List

As for the price of the car, the 2018 Audi S3 is not going to increase too much. Currently only the pricing for the Sportback version is available, while the convertible and the sedan are going to be priced a little bit later. The current S3 models are offered for a price of €40,600 in Germany, which makes them cost about $46,190. The updated versions of the S3 model are reported to cost €42,000 now, which is around $47,780. Of course these prices are given without added options and they could rise if you decide to customize your car and prim it up with the offered equipment. The pricing will certainly not tamper with the popularity of the car as it is mostly in the same range as what the competition is bringing out, so the sales are going to be intact as we estimate it.

Some Novelties for the Exterior Design of the 2018 Audi S3

The 2018 Audi S3 is introducing something relatively new which we haven’t seen from Audi recently. Audi is known for mainly giving very small and secure changes both inside and out when it comes to facelifts. Playing it safe has become their method in recent years that people are saying that it has also gone to very ridiculous levels. But luckily, the introduction of the new design language already seen before in the Q7 car is going to change all of that and it brings the S3 a new look that we can be boastful with.

What they did here is to borrow some sharper and more aggressive elements from the A4 and that way make the body of the car sportier. This is much more noticeable up front with a wider hexagonal grille and newly styled headlamps as well. The ending and the bumper have also been modified so they look entirely muscular compared to the last time and the aggressiveness continues with the larger U-shaped gap which goes under the hood. The headlights also add Xenon elements which come with LEDs while you can also get the Matrix LED technology as optional.

The rear end of the 2018 Audi S3 may seem the same at first glance, but the differences are very much noticeable here as well. The tailgate has a horizontal LED strip and the bumper is completely different. The exhaust system still uses a quad-pipe configuration while the side panels are the same. There are new wheel options and the wheel designs available as well and a total of six body colors to choose from now.

A Very Good Interior

You would expect more to happen and change for the inside of the 2018 Audi S3, but the car has mostly transferred the look of the current vehicles. You might think that this is bad but in the case of the S3 model it is not. The car already had a pretty decent looking inside and the setup was not dated at all and because of that had an advantage compared to many other competing models. We would like to see some element crossover from other Audi brands, but it does not matter as the vehicle still looks good on the inside this way.

The additions that have been added may be small, but are very helpful in making this car into a very good model. The designers have updated the steering wheel and also improved the leather for the seats while adding a heating and a massage option. A more important addition is the use of Audi’s virtual cockpit which replaces the traditional gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch TFT screen that comes with various display modes and shows you a lot of information that way.

The infotainment system is also updated and will use a smartphone layout to allow much easier use. You can operate most of the controls using a rotary knob and make it much easier for you that way. LTE connectivity is also offered and uses a Wi-Fi hotspot and it allows you to use most of your devices that way. All in all, the cabin may seem similar to before but as we said it is not a bad thing. The more interesting part of the update is the entire technological update which comes with it.

What is new for the Powertrain of the 2018 Audi S3 Car?

In fact, the powertrain of the 2018 Audi S3 has been transferred as well. The model will continue to use the same 4-cylidner, 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine but will get an output increase. More power results in a total output of 310 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque for the newest vehicle. The update allows the car go gain 10 horses more and also adds 15 lb-ft of twist added. As far as your transmission choices go, you will be able to choose between a seven-speed S Tronic automatic and a six-speed manual. The model will also include some technological features like Quattro all-wheel drive system, Electronic Stabilization Control system and also have fixed dampers, all standard.

0-60 mph and Top Speed

We are still waiting for the official specs for the 2018 Audi S3 to be released. As far as the acceleration and top speed is concerned, we do have some speculations that we can base our thoughts on. The S Tronic  version swill most likely be able to speed up to 60 mph in about 4.7 seconds while if you chose the automatic one, the time will go down to 4.9 seconds. Both versions will certainly have the standard top speed of 155 mph, which is probably going t be limited for all trim versions.

Fuel Consumption Ratings

The same way as the new stats are not available for the 2018 Audi S3, it goes the same for the fuel economy of the car. They have yet to make these specs public and we are waiting patiently for them. But they did not make the vehicle too much fuel efficient so the ratings will probably stay close to the ones that are available now. This is not going to tamper with the vehicle’s popularity as the ratings were pretty decent so far. The vehicle is able to consume 21 mpg within the city while the consumption on the highway goes to 28 mpg. The combined ratings for consuming fuel are about 24 mpg as the EPA states.

The Dimensions and Size of the 2018 Audi S3

With the redesign and the facelift that was given to the 2018 Audi S3, we immediately saw that there were not going to be any changes in the size of it. The designers have also announced this before the release and they only concentrated on updating the car. The new design language was also well incorporated and well-appointed into the look of the new car, but the changes in the size were decided against off so it makes the car similar to before. The vehicle is still 175.8 inches long, the wheelbase is 103.6 inches, the height is 54.8 inches and the width remains at 70.7 inches. On the inside the passenger volume is kept to 87 cu ft and the cargo space is 10 cu ft.

2018 Audi S3 Safety

When it comes to the safety equipment for the 2018 Audi S3, most of it is carried over. The updated version will use the currently used equipment and technology so you will get a pretty similar car like the last time. But there are going to be certain updates and new additions so the car is not going to go without some updates even for the safety. The newly added equipment includes  Rear-Cross Traffic Warning,  Active Lane Assist, a  pedestrian monitor,  Pre-Sense Front warning, Traffic Jam Assist, a Stop&Go feature and Adaptive Cruise Control. There are some pieces of technology that are going to be useful here when it comes to slower traffic where it is also hard to move and where one needs to be careful as well. Audi is making sure that people have help in all fronts.

What are the Competing Vehicles?

First of all, the very reason for releasing the 2018 Audi S3 vehicle is to get it fresher and keep it competitive in the market. Nowadays, it is near to impossible to keep your vehicle in the top if you do not constantly come up with great new ideas for it and update it with the latest technology or equipment. Either way, Audi has realized this and wants to keep its vehicle in the very top. The competition is trying to do the same so the race will always continue and only small details will determine who gets up on top in the end. All in all, vehicles that are going to be the closest rivals in the segment include the Volkswagen Golf R, which has a similar engine to the S3 and boasts comparable performance, and the Ford Focus RS, which has already given us its latest version which is also the most powerful hatchback in the market.
