2018 BMW M4 Release Date and Overview

We are preparing for the release of the 2018 BMW M4 model which will see some improvements compared to the original version. The M4 model has seen no real innovations since 2012, when the car changed its name to M4. It will now bring in refinements like improved LED headlights and 3D LED Taillights, but also add some pieces of equipment like an updated navigation system offered as standard for this model. Additionally, what we have instore is a mild power upgrade which will see the power rise to 431 horsepower, which is a 7 hp increase compared to the last model.

BMW decided to separate their sedan and coupe models in its Series 3 brand and they did so by establishing the coupe models under the name M4. The inception of these cars started in 2012 and it was the first time an M4 model was made. But they kept it mostly the same since then so an update was due to emerge sooner or later.

But, as BMW is not known for making extravagant updates, they decided to make the facelift a mild one. The exterior does not change drastically and it looks mostly the same. The release date of the car will be different in the US and in its home market, but we expect the model to be a good one either way. The pictures have already teased us enough so it was time for a real review.

When is the Release Date for the 2018 BMW M4 Planned?

The newly announced 2018 BMW M4 model will hit the stage soon enough. In fact, we are anticipating the model to arrive already by mid-year in Germany, which also means it being offered in the respective markets around Europe. The M4 is expected to cross the pond and become available in the US next year, around the first quarter of 2018, hence it being labeled as a 2018 model.

What is the Price of the Car?

The 2018 BMW M4 model has still not officially been priced in the US. The model has already brought the figures in regards with the German market, which will start sales at £57,817. But the US-spec model will probably be offered at around $67,000, a possible $800 increase compared to the previous model, and $75,700 for the convertible version.

What are the Exterior Updates?

If you were hoping for a large update for the outside part of the 2018 BMW M4 model, you will be largely disappointed. It seems that the designers were extremely lazy when it came to refurbishing this vehicle as they kept most of the look the same. The leftover parts include the same front and rear fascia, hood and the side profile.

The kidney grille is also left unchanged with the black, vertical louvers remaining. But the only innovation here is the addition of LED headlamps as standard with hexagonal LED strips provided as optional. The rear end just manages to change the layout of the taillights, with the LEDs being standard for the model.

The additions made for the convertible option are added black painted trim elements which are going to be seen for various different parts of the outer layer of the car. These include the front grille surround, fender vent logo, window trim, and the rear M4 logo.

2018 BMW M4 Interior Changes

The inside of the 2018 BMW M4 does not change so much and follows the same formula as the outside does. In fact the majority of the inside has been kept with only a few material and technological updates made. The only style change is the addition of illuminated M4 logos placed on the seatbacks. There are some elements on the dash that now come in chrome or are electroplated, so they give a kind of a blackish appearance.

The dash will have the same contrasting stitching as the rest of the interior upholstery does. The technological updates come with the new operating system, the same one used for the 5 Series models. It comes equipped with a multi-layout which is much easier to operate. The car will also include some other standard features like the BMW’s ConncetedDrive services, which come with advanced Bluetooth phone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot and inductive charging.

Powertrain Setup

The setup for the 2018 BMW M4 has been quite interestingly adapted. When the 3 Series model split into two, they needed to adapt the changes in regards with emission standards and fuel economy for the resulted changes that have been made. This means that the V-8 engine was unsuitable to be used for this version of the car and so we came to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six option. The engine makes great use of the M TwinPower Turbo technology and also uses Valvetronic and Double VANOS camshaft/valve timing. It all results in an output of 431 horsepower between 5,500 and 7,300 rpm and 406 pound-feet between 1,850 and 5,500 rpm. The transmission choices are also carried over and we can choose between a seven-speed, M double-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual.

2018 BMW M4 0-60 mph and Top Speed

The model will get great acceleration ability and the 2018 BMW M4 is going to be perhaps one of the better models when it comes to speed. The model will be capable of archive 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds using the manual shifter, while 3.9 seconds are necessary with a M-DCT one. The top speed is going to be 155 mph.

Improved Fuel Economy

The newly improved 2018 BMW M4 will actually come with better fuel economy specs. This is an interesting matter for this version of the car and we assume that the newly used lightweight materials will also result in much better fuel economy. For now estimations say that a combined effort of 32 mpg is probably going to be possible.

The Dimensions of the Car

With the miniscule changes brought to the exterior, the dimensions of the 2018 BMW M4 have not changed at all as well. Once we found out that the exterior design of the car has not changed so much, we immediately noticed that the size is kept the same. This is backed up by the facts which say that the car is still 184.5 inches long, has a wheelbase of 110.7 inches, height 54.4 inches and width 73.6 inches.

Safety Characteristics

The crash data for the 2018 BMW M4 is still not available and we will probably have to wait a bit until we get it. But we do know some of the standard pieces of equipment that we are going to get here. These include eight airbags, automatic crash notification, BMW Assist emergency communications and stolen-vehicle recovery assistance. Optionally available are Driver Assistance Plus package which has a camera- and radar-based blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping alert, side- and top-view cameras, forward collision warning, pedestrian protection and high- and low-speed automatic braking.

Competing Vehicles

The arrival of the 2018 BMW M4 will not stir up the market as one would expect it to. In fact the comparison will offer steady and quite useful offers as well. The model will probably go head to head with its rivals with everting coming down to the wire in terms of sales. Other cars in the segment include Audi RS5 and Cadillac ATS-V Coupe.
